Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Cleaning

Modern diesel engines carry a particulate filter in the exhaust line — a ceramic honeycomb of alternately sealed channels that traps soot before it reaches the outside air. Under the right conditions the filter cleans itself: a process called regeneration burns the collected soot into ash at high exhaust temperatures. The filter has a finite capacity, and regeneration only works when driving conditions allow it.

Why DPFs clog

Short journeys and stop-start city traffic rarely bring the exhaust up to regeneration temperature. Soot then accumulates faster than it can be burnt off. Faulty pressure or temperature sensors, worn injectors and other engine-side issues can also interrupt regeneration. Beyond a certain saturation level the engine management limits power to protect itself, and the warning light appears.

How professional cleaning works

1. The saturation level and sensor data are read with diagnostic equipment.
2. The cause of the failed regeneration is identified — cleaning alone does not fix a sensor or engine fault.
3. Depending on the filter's condition, cleaning is performed on the vehicle or with the filter removed.
4. Adaptation values are reset so the engine management recognises the cleaned filter.
5. A road test confirms that regeneration now completes normally.

A structurally damaged filter — melted or cracked ceramic — cannot be recovered by cleaning; in that case we explain the findings and the honest options.
