How Bentley Began
Bentley was founded by Walter Owen Bentley, a railway engineer by training. During the First World War he developed aluminium components for aircraft engines with the Royal Air Force, and in 1919 he drew on that experience to establish Bentley Motors. From the marque's earliest years it became known for building some of the most prestigious luxury cars in automotive history.
The year 1980 marked the start of a revival, when the company was acquired by the British aviation group Vickers — a genuine turning point for the marque. In 1997 Vickers decided to sell its Rolls-Royce group, and the negotiations that followed split the two famous names: the Rolls-Royce brand went to BMW, while Bentley joined Volkswagen AG.
Formally part of the Volkswagen Group from 2002 and fully separated from Rolls-Royce, the storied British marque returned to Le Mans racing and launched a new generation of models — the Continental R, Continental GTC and Continental Flying Spur — described as a blend of retro-inspired luxury, sporting character and prestige that built on the successes of its celebrated past.
