Headlight Alignment

Badly aimed headlights restrict the driver's own vision and dazzle oncoming traffic at the same time. Headlight alignment uses a beam-setting device to bring the beam's height and direction back to the values intended for the car.

What does Headlight Alignment involve at Alpay Servis?

Badly aimed headlights restrict the driver's own vision and dazzle oncoming traffic at the same time. Headlight alignment uses a beam-setting device to bring the beam's height and direction back to the values intended for the car.

Headlights are the sole source of safety on a night drive — yet good illumination depends less on bulb power than on the beam pointing at the right place. A beam aimed too high blinds oncoming drivers; one aimed too low shortens your own seeing distance. Headlight alignment is the procedure that restores this balance.

How the adjustment is done

The car is placed on level ground and a beam-setting device is positioned in front of each headlight. The device measures the beam's height and direction; using the adjustment screws, the beam is brought to the reference values specified for the vehicle. Left and right are set individually, because their jobs differ — the beam pattern is designed to light the road edge without dazzling the opposite lane.

When to have it checked

  • After replacing a headlight, bulb or levelling motor
  • After any front-end impact, however minor
  • When suspension springs, shock absorbers or a ride-height sensor have been renewed
  • When night vision feels short or oncoming cars keep flashing you

On automatically levelled systems, a faulty sensor or adjustment motor can also shift the beam, so the electronics are checked before any mechanical adjustment. Yellowed lenses scatter light, so lens condition is assessed during the alignment as well.

If you are not happy with your view at night, or any of the work above has recently been done, contact our Bornova workshop by phone or through the online appointment form — your headlights will be measured and set to the correct values.

What Does This Service Cover?

  • Measuring beam height with an alignment device
  • Adjusting the left and right headlights individually
  • Checking bulb type and headlight lens condition
  • Checking systems with automatic level sensors
  • Verifying the beam pattern after adjustment

Signs You May Need This

  • The road ahead is poorly lit when driving at night
  • Oncoming drivers frequently flash their lights at you
  • The beam points upward or sideways instead of at the road
  • The two headlights illuminate different distances
  • Yellowed or visibly clouded headlight lenses

Frequently Asked Questions

What knocks headlights out of alignment?

Minor front-end impacts, headlight or bulb replacement, renewal of suspension springs or shock absorbers, and ordinary vibration over time can all shift the beam. After any of these, having the aim checked with a beam-setting device is the sensible step.

Is alignment different for LED and xenon headlights?

The principle is the same, but these lights produce a much sharper cut-off line, so even a small deviation causes noticeable glare. On systems with automatic levelling, the sensor and the adjustment motors need checking alongside the alignment itself.

Why do my headlights point up when the car is loaded?

Weight in the boot lowers the rear of the car and raises the beam. Many vehicles have manual or automatic headlight levelling to compensate. If you regularly drive loaded, having the aim checked for that condition prevents dazzling others.

Will alignment fix clouded headlight lenses?

No. A yellowed or scratched lens scatters the light, weakening illumination even when the aim is correct. In that case the condition of the lens needs its own assessment in addition to the alignment.
