Coil springs are the most fundamental element of the suspension: they carry the body's weight, absorb impacts from the road by flexing, and work with the shock absorbers to keep each tyre in contact with the surface. Because they do their job silently, they are rarely thought about - yet a good share of your car's comfort, roadholding and braking performance depends on their health.

How springs wear out

Metal fatigue is built into a spring's nature; every bump, every load and every corner flexes it once more. Over time a spring either sags - losing its original strength so the car sits lower on that side - or it snaps at a point weakened by corrosion. Breakage is often sudden, announcing itself with a sharp metallic noise followed by a visibly altered stance.

How the replacement is done

Inspection starts with the car on the lift: springs are examined for breaks, cracks and sagging, and ride height is compared side to side. Replacement uses a spring of the correct rate and dimensions for the car, and the spring seats and mounts are checked at the same time. Renewing both springs of the same axle is the preferred approach for a balanced result. Wheel alignment is checked afterwards, and a road test confirms the car's stance and stability.
