What the Control Arm Does
The control arm is the main suspension link that ties the wheel to the body. At its outer end sits the ball joint; on the body side, rubber bushings. The bushings soak up road impacts while the arm itself keeps the wheel's geometry fixed in every situation — which is what makes the car both comfortable and predictable to drive.
How the Symptoms Develop
The rubber bushings harden with age, crack and lose their bond with the metal sleeve inside. The first sign is usually a dull knock over speed bumps. Later, vibration reaches the steering wheel under braking, the car begins pulling to one side and irregular tyre wear appears. After a heavy impact the arm body itself can bend, leaving the geometry permanently out of true.
