What Transmission Fluid Does
Transmission fluid protects the gears and bearings against wear, balances the unit's temperature and — in automatics — transmits the hydraulic pressure that performs each gear change. Manual and automatic gearboxes use different fluids, and every type requires the flow and friction characteristics its own design calls for.
Why the Fluid Ages
Inside a working transmission the fluid heats and cools continuously while carrying the micro-particles shed by wearing parts. Its additives deplete over time, it darkens and its protective ability falls. Heavy city traffic, hot weather and loaded driving all accelerate the process. A transmission running on aged fluid shifts worse and worse, and internal wear enters a self-feeding cycle.

Is transmission fluid sealed for life, or should it be changed?
Some manufacturers describe the fluid as filled for life, but dense city traffic, hot climates and loaded driving age it faster than calculated. The fluid's real condition is judged from its colour, smell and the particles it carries; the decision follows that inspection.
Why is fluid so critical in an automatic transmission?
In an automatic, the fluid does more than lubricate: it transmits the hydraulic pressure that executes gear changes and defines the friction behaviour of the clutch packs. When ageing fluid can no longer do this, shift quality degrades directly and internal wear accelerates.
What does using the wrong fluid lead to?
