Enzo Ferrari's Life Work
Enzo Ferrari was born in Modena in 1898. After painful family losses in the First World War years, he began his racing career, and by 1920 he was driving for Alfa Romeo, where his name spread quickly. In 1929 he founded Scuderia Ferrari as Alfa Romeo's racing team, and after the birth of his son Dino he stepped back from driving to run the racing and engineering side.
Contract restrictions after leaving Alfa Romeo kept him from racing or designing under his own name for a period, so he founded Auto-Avio Costruzioni and supplied components to racing teams. When Modena was bombed during the Second World War, he moved his workshop to Maranello — where, in the mid-1940s, the Ferrari company itself was born. Success came fast: victories at Le Mans and in Grand Prix racing through the 1950s, and six consecutive Le Mans wins between 1960 and 1965.
Financial strain shaped the company's later history. A famous 1963 offer from Ford collapsed when Enzo refused to give up control of the racing team — a refusal that spurred Ford's GT40 programme. In 1969 Fiat took a half share in Ferrari, later building it into a controlling stake. The partnership with the design house Pininfarina produced icons such as the Testarossa of 1984, and the F40 marked the marque's fortieth year shortly before Enzo Ferrari's death in 1988.
The road cars of the 1990s — the 456 GT, F355, 550 Maranello and the anniversary F50 — confirmed Ferrari's standing, while in Formula 1 the rebuilding led by Jean Todt and the arrival of Michael Schumacher brought a constructors' title in 1999 and an era of championship dominance in the early 2000s.
