From Race Team to Road Cars
McLaren was founded in 1963 by the New Zealand Formula 1 driver Bruce McLaren as a racing team. Within a year the small crew had built its first sports car, and its V8-powered machines went on to win the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, setting the team on a path that would make it one of the most successful in motorsport after Scuderia Ferrari.
The team first entered the Monaco Grand Prix in 1966 and took its first world championship in 1974 with Emerson Fittipaldi. In 1981 a merger with Ron Dennis's Project 4 organisation created the modern McLaren, whose cars long carried the MP4 designation. The late 1980s brought the legendary battles of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost; after leaner years, the switch to Mercedes engines in 1995 and the arrival of designer Adrian Newey restored the team to the front, with Mika Hakkinen champion in 1998 and 1999 and, after the disappointments of 2007, Lewis Hamilton taking the drivers' title in Brazil in 2008.
Racing expertise flowed directly into the road cars. McLaren pioneered the carbon-fibre chassis in Formula 1 and carried it into the McLaren F1 road car of the 1990s, of which just over a hundred were built across all versions; the F1 held the road-car speed record for years. Today McLaren remains a global sports car manufacturer, with models such as the F1, P1, MP4-12C and 650S among its landmarks.
