Antifreeze (Coolant) Change
Antifreeze does more than prevent freezing in winter: it protects the engine from overheating all year round and shields the cooling system from corrosion. It loses these properties with age, so periodic renewal matters.
What does Antifreeze (Coolant) Change involve at Alpay Servis?
Antifreeze does more than prevent freezing in winter: it protects the engine from overheating all year round and shields the cooling system from corrosion. It loses these properties with age, so periodic renewal matters.
The engine's quiet protector
Coolant circulates in a closed loop that keeps the engine at a stable operating temperature. Antifreeze lowers that fluid's freezing point, raises its boiling point and - just as importantly - protects the system's metal and gasket surfaces against corrosion. Because it is invisible in daily use, it is easy to forget; yet cooling system failures are among the leading causes of the most expensive engine damage.
What changes over time
The protective additive package inside antifreeze depletes gradually through use. Once the additives are spent, the fluid can no longer do its full job: sediment collects in the radiator core, water pump bearings wear faster, and the thermostat may begin to misbehave. The decline is silent - very often the first symptom is a temperature needle climbing in traffic.
What the service involves
The work starts with measuring the fluid's condition and density. The old coolant is then drained, the system is flushed if needed, and antifreeze of the correct type for your engine is filled at the right ratio. Air is bled from the circuit, because a cooling system with trapped air pockets cannot cool properly. Finally the car is brought to operating temperature and checked for leaks and stable readings.
When to have it checked
An unusual rise on the temperature gauge, a coolant level that keeps dropping, or cloudy, rusty fluid in the expansion tank are all reasons not to wait. Use the online appointment form or call our workshop in Bornova, Izmir to arrange a check.
What Does This Service Cover?
- Checking coolant level and overall condition
- Measuring antifreeze density and freeze protection
- Leak inspection of radiator, hoses and cap
- Draining the old fluid and filling with the correct antifreeze
- Bleeding air from the system and testing at temperature
Signs You May Need This
- The engine temperature gauge reads higher than normal
- The coolant level keeps dropping
- Fluid in the expansion tank looks rusty, cloudy or dark
- The heater no longer warms the cabin as it used to
- You see coloured fluid traces under the car
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does antifreeze need changing at intervals?
The corrosion inhibitors inside antifreeze deplete over time. Even when the fluid still appears to protect against freezing, it stops protecting metal parts and the water pump, and rust and sediment build up faster in the radiator. That is why a change is a different need from a top-up.
Is antifreeze necessary in summer too?
Yes. Antifreeze raises the coolant's boiling point, making overheating in hot weather less likely, and it protects the system from corrosion all year. Treating it as a winter-only product is one of the most common causes of cooling system wear.
Does running plain water instead of coolant cause harm?
Not immediately, but seriously over time. Untreated water accelerates corrosion, deposits scale, and can freeze in winter with damage extending to a cracked engine block. Water added in an emergency should be replaced with the proper mixture as soon as possible.
