CV Axle Replacement
The drive axles carry power from the gearbox to the wheels through flexible CV joints. Worn joint heads and torn dust boots first announce themselves with clicking on turns; left alone, they can leave a car stranded.
What does CV Axle Replacement involve at Alpay Servis?
The drive axles carry power from the gearbox to the wheels through flexible CV joints. Worn joint heads and torn dust boots first announce themselves with clicking on turns; left alone, they can leave a car stranded.
A CV axle transmits rotation from the transmission to a driven wheel. On front-wheel-drive cars, each half shaft carries an inner and an outer constant-velocity joint, allowing the shaft to follow both suspension travel and steering angle while spinning under load. That flexibility comes at a price: the joints work hard, and the only things protecting them are the grease packed inside and the rubber boot sealing it in.
How Axles Fail
Most failures start with a torn boot. Unnoticed, the grease is thrown out by rotation and replaced by water, dust and grit. A joint running dry and contaminated develops play quickly — first heard as clicking on tight turns, later felt as vibration even in a straight line. Hard launches, speed bumps taken quickly and high engine torque all shorten joint life further.
What the Service Involves
- With the car raised, boots, joints and the shaft body are inspected visually.
- The wheel is rotated freely and the car is driven at full lock to confirm the noise source.
- If wear is limited to one joint, only the head is renewed; widespread wear calls for a complete axle.
- During fitting, fasteners are torqued to specification and the gearbox-side seals are checked.
- The repair is signed off with a road test.
Axle wear never improves on its own; it only progresses. Assessing the symptoms early keeps the repair small and removes the risk of a breakdown. If you are unsure what a noise from your car means, you can book through the online appointment form or call our workshop in Bornova, İzmir — after inspection we explain the findings clearly and go through the options with you.
What Does This Service Cover?
- Play check on the inner and outer CV joints
- Inspection of dust boots for tears, cracks and grease leaks
- Road test at full steering lock to confirm the noise source
- Replacement of the joint head or the complete axle as needed
- Post-fit torque, sealing and road-test verification
Signs You May Need This
- Clicking from a front wheel when cornering
- Vibration felt through the car under acceleration
- Grease sprayed around the inside of a wheel
- Humming or droning from underneath at steady speed
Frequently Asked Questions
Should just the joint be replaced, or the whole axle?
It depends on where the wear sits. If damage is confined to one joint, replacing only that head can be enough; if the shaft itself is bent or several joints have play, a complete axle is the sounder repair. The final call is made after removal, when the parts can be physically inspected.
Can I keep driving with a torn dust boot?
It is not advisable. Once the boot tears, the grease is flung out and water and grit enter the joint, wearing it rapidly. Caught early, renewing just the boot and grease avoids a far more involved repair later on.
What happens if a failing axle is ignored?
In an advanced state the joint can bind or separate entirely, at which point drive to the wheel is lost and the car cannot move. If clicking on turns is getting steadily louder, having it checked before any long journey is the safe course of action.
