How a Turbocharger Works
A turbo uses the energy of the exhaust gases to spin a turbine; a compressor on the same shaft then forces more air into the engine. More air means more efficient combustion and more power. In doing this the shaft reaches extraordinarily high rotational speeds and the exhaust side runs extremely hot — and the only thing keeping the unit alive is the uninterrupted oil film in its bearings.
Where Failures Come From
The most common root cause is lubrication: dirty or insufficient oil wears the shaft bearings and the play grows. The second major cause is foreign objects entering through the intake and striking the blades. Carbon build-up, a blocked oil return line and crankcase ventilation problems also strain the turbo. The symptoms arrive in sequence: power loss, a change in sound, smoke and rising oil consumption.

Why are most turbo failures oil-related?
The turbo shaft spins at extremely high speeds on a thin film of oil. Oil that is dirty, low or overdue for a change cannot maintain that film; the bearings wear quickly and the shaft develops play. Regular oil maintenance is therefore the turbo's most effective protection.
Should a turbo be repaired or replaced outright?
It depends on the extent of the damage. Cases limited to shaft and bearing wear can be repaired, while a cracked housing, broken blades or advanced contact damage may require replacement. The definite answer is shared with you after the turbo is removed and its internals assessed.
Can I keep driving once a turbo fault is noticed?
